What is the Tech Flex Leaders Program?
The Tech Flex Leaders is a free, nine-month immersive experience tailored for high school juniors and seniors in New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami. It blends technical training, professional development, and mentorship to prepare students for the tech industry. From basic coding to deploying fully operational tech products, the program offers a comprehensive learning journey. Participants who successfully complete the program also earn a $1,000 stipend.
Managed by America on Tech (AOT), a leading technology talent accelerator, the program aims to bridge the gap between students and the tech industry. Founded in 2014, AOT has developed a suite of programs to support students at various stages of their tech journeys. Tech Flex Leaders focuses on helping students build on their existing skills while providing internship opportunities that act as a launchpad for future careers.
How is the Tech Flex Leaders Program structured?
The program runs for nine months, with weekly sessions that include technical training, professional development workshops, and career events. Most sessions are virtual via Zoom, but key events like leadership workshops and demo days are held in person. This hybrid model ensures a blend of accessibility and hands-on experience.
The course is structured into two main semesters (or three for students in New York City).
First Semester (September to December): In the first semester, you will start with the fundamentals—coding, web development, HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. No prior programming experience is required. By the end of this semester, you’ll complete a web development project and present it to a panel of judges at a demo day, showcasing your progress and creativity.
Second Semester (January to May): In the second semester, you will select from five focused tracks that align with your interests and career aspirations.
The Advanced Web Development track builds on the foundational skills from the first semester, offering a deeper dive into web technologies. You will learn advanced coding languages such as JavaScript and explore frameworks like React and Angular, which are essential for creating dynamic and interactive web applications.
The Digital Marketing track focuses on the influence of digital strategies on consumer behavior, teaching skills like social media management, content creation, and influencer marketing to prepare students for the rapidly growing digital space.
For those interested in mathematics and data, the Data Science track covers statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization, using tools such as Python, R, TensorFlow, and scikit-learn to work with real-world datasets.
The UX Design track emphasizes the interaction between technology and its users, covering topics like user research, interface design, and prototype testing to develop intuitive and user-friendly technology.
Finally, the Product Management track is ideal for students aiming to enhance their leadership skills while exploring the business side of technology. This track provides insights into market research, product planning, and agile methodologies, equipping participants to manage products from concept to launch.
Third Semester (NYC Exclusive): Students in NYC get an extra semester focused on securing paid summer internships. AOT’s Access Team provides tailored support to connect students with opportunities in the tech field. While similar opportunities may be available in LA and Miami, this third semester is a key advantage for NYC participants.
Is it prestigious?
While Tech Flex Leaders is limited to NYC, LA, and Miami, it is a highly prestigious program. The program partners with top-tier organizations like Accenture and Codecademy, and the alumni often land internships or jobs at leading companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Visa. In the 2022–2023 cohort, 281 students successfully completed the program, highlighting its selectivity and focus on quality.
Eligibility and Application Process
The Tech Flex Leaders program is open to high school juniors and seniors currently attending schools in New York City (all boroughs), Los Angeles County, or Miami-Dade/Broward County. There are no academic prerequisites or prior programming experience required, making the program accessible to students with varying levels of technical knowledge.
Additionally, the program prioritizes applications from students who identify as minorities or those attending schools that meet AOT’s Economic Needs Index. This approach ensures that underrepresented groups have access to valuable opportunities in the tech industry.
Applications for the 2024–2025 cycle open in May. To increase your chances of acceptance, it is advisable to apply early. The priority deadline for submissions is July 19, while the final deadline is August 15. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and candidates typically receive decisions by late August.
How much does Tech Flex Leaders cost?
It’s completely free! Plus, students who finish the program earn a $1,000 stipend. Beyond this, participants gain access to paid internships through AOT’s employer network, adding even more value.
